Rockfish Cup 2011 Results

A perfect day for Lacrosse at Chesapeake HS and the day got started with a great game for the U15 Rockfish White team vs the Ruffriders from Baltimore. A defensive struggle for the majority of the first half found us trailing 2-1 at halftime. The offense in the first half was non-existent forcing things too much and not moving the ball very well at all. After a sluggish start in the 2nd half we found ourselves trailing 5-2 with about 6 minutes left to play. At this point we finally woke up offensively and got the score to 5-4 with some great dodging and dumping to guys who were moving well off ball. Shayne Kunkle (1 goal, 3 assists) really helped to create some scoring chances for us by beating his man and making the smart pass when the slide came. The ruffriders pulled ahead late in the game 6-4 but the Fish never gave up and tied the game 6-6 with 17 seconds left. In overtime, Andrew Bledsoe won the opening faceoff and on our first possession, dodging from behind we found James Taylor ( 3 goals, 1 assist) on the crease and he was able to finish for the game winner!!

Game 2 vs SP Lax was opposite of game 1, we started fast in this game with a goal from Bledsoe on the first faceoff and some good defensive play we hung right with this very good team and trailed 4-3 at halftime. In the second half we lost our spark a bit and they pulled ahead of us and we were not able to catch up resulting in a 8-4 loss. Defensively we were ball watching way too much and offensively we fell back into the trap of forcing the ball and not playing as a team.

After starting 1-1 for the day we needed to win our last game in order to make the playoffs. After a close first half with Chesapeake Rock "B" team we pulled ahead in the second half and were up 5-1 at one point. The Rock did not quit and came back late in the half but we were able to hang of for a 6-4 win and a birth in the playoffs!! We drew the Chesapeake Rock "A" team in the first round and we found out quickly why there were 3-0 at this point. This was the best overall team we had faced this summer and the little things you don't execute against a team like this, they really make you pay. Ball-Watching on defense, not moving on offense and our Clear really hurt us!! We lost 12-1 but this was a good game for us to see the kind of team we hope to be if we keep working hard. The coaches were proud of the boys for their play and we need to work hard before our next tournament as we will be playing some outstanding club teams next week !!
